Introduction

This is all about the sharing of their rich history and fine engineering design that fascinates.

My Tackle Box, Abu Ambassadeur was created with the intent of sharing the Rich History and Fine Engineering Design of Fishing Equipment with anyone who appreciates them as much as I do.

Like many anglers, I was introduced to fishing by a good buddy of mine more than two decades ago and this transformed from a pastime into a passion. The love for their Rich History and Fine Engineering Design got me into this collection. I shifted from the Japan Domestic Model (JDM) Tackle of the late 1990s to the Classic Abu Ambassaduers; which is the main focus of my humble collection today.

I have gained a lot over the years, from the knowledge to the wonderful friends I have made in the course of my collection; this is invaluable to me. I will like to acknowledge all my friends for their selfless contribution to the details of this website, else it will not be as detailed as I wanted it to be, benefiting our community.

The sharing of the History behind these Art-pieces provides an Educational Tour for any Users or Collectors-to-be, while the Engineering Design provides a glimpse to the feature they are associated with. In addition to the contributions from the wonderful friend of mine, references and research together with the opportunity to inspect more than 400 pieces of these fishing reels equipped me with these knowledge to share.

In this a One-Stop website, you will gain insights of the histories and also featured photos of these Fine Fishing Equipment of the various models; Enhancing your Collection and Increasing your overall fishing experience.

This is an on-going effort and I will update them as soon as I have the capacity to do so. I seek your understanding on this.

Classic Abu Ambassadeur

ABU has established herself into a household brand-named in many parts of the world because of her rich history and many of the “First” (patented parts) in her Fishing Reels. Her Fine Engineering Design was an engineering marvel, setting the stage for modern casting reel design. These reels are still functional today; some close to 70 years later. Today, these Swedish Art Pieces are not only used, but also collected by many worldwide.

Her rich history is something that always fascinates me; knowing how the company persevere through her time; very much like how these Art Pieces endure through the time into becoming what they are today.

Below is a brief history on how ABU started. The following details are comprehensive, but not exclusively limited.

HISTORY

1880: Henning Hammarlund a successful inventor, scientist and author visits Svangsta looking for a good location for his future watch factory.

1887: “Halda Watchmaking Company” (A.B.Halda Fabriker) was established by Henning Hammarlund.

1891: Carl-August Borgstrom, a watchmaker was employed by Halda Watchmaking Company.

1896: The First Halda Taximeter was produced.

1920: Halda Watchmaking Company was liquidated and Carl-August Borgstrom continued to make watches with the machinery and parts purchased from the company.

1921: AB Urfabriken (ABU) was established by Carl-August Borgstrom, producing telephone control clocks and taximeters.

1926: AB Urfabriken presents its first Taximeter under the name Record.

1934: Carl-August Borgstrom passed on and the leadership of ABU was passed to his son, Gote Brogstrom.

1939: “Record” Taximeter, the smallest taximeter of the time, designed by Gote Borgstrom was developed and ready for production. This design masterpiece was however put to a stop due to Second World War.

1941: ABU presented her first series of Casting Reels to the Swedish Wholesalers, the RECORD 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700 and 1800. At the same time, ABU also manufacture OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) reels for Pebeco. As her demand increased, ABU moved from it’s original timber building to a new building (currently the first section of the present building).

1945: RECORD 2100 and 2200 was introduced.

1948: RECORD 2500 was introduced.

1949: Ake Murvall is hired as the Production Manager and Chief Designer.

1950: RECORD 1300 was introduced.

1951: This is the biggest highlight of ABU’s History. ABU received the high honor of the Appointment of Imperial Household Service, the purveyor to HM KONUNGENS HOVLEV, the King of Sweden. This official crest of the high honor was granted to ABU and has been the symbol of ABU products since.

1952: A new unique casting reel, the Record Ambassadeur 5000 MOD SG was developed. This new, red casting reel was designed with the latest high-tech features such as the Centrifugal Brakes and Star Drag.

1953: RECORD 2300 was introduced.

1954: The Ambassadeur went on display at AFTMA show in Conrad Hilton Hotel, Chicago.

1955: The first Small Mouth Bass was imported to Sweden by the Borgstroms and ABU’s first spinning reel, the ABU 444 was introduced to the market. The Record Ambassadeur 5000, 5000A, and 6000 models were also added to the series of Ambassadeur lineups.

*ABU started the use of Serial Numbering System on Ambassadeur 5000A sometime between late 1955 to April 1956.

1956: Garcia became the exclusive ABU distributor for the United States and Abu-matic, the first closed-faced spinning reel was released.

1962: The popular High-End Gold-Plated Ambassadeur De Luxe was introduced for the first time. This is also the first Ambassadeur Reel produced with Ball Bearings. Also in the same year, ABU introduced the Ambassadeur 2000, 2500 and 2600 series reels.

1964: ABU introduced her first Ambassadeur 3000 reel. Sighted with plastic sideplates, this model is very different from other Ambassadeur model reels from the classic year. Also in the same year, ABU introduced the Ambassadeur 2050 and 2650 series reels as well as the Ambassadeur 5000B.

1965: Cardinal spinning reels were introduced. Also in the same year, ABU introduced the Ambassadeur 5000X and 1750 series reels.

1966: Ambassadeur 5000C reels were introduced.

1967: ABU changed all her frames from 4-Screws Model to 3-Screws Model.

1969: ABU acquires Haldex Taximeter Company in Halmstad and built a new 5,000ft factory producing rods across the street from their reel factory. This is also the year where Ambassadeur 6000C reels were introduced.

1971: ABU changed its Serial Numbering System to Production Lot Numbering System.

1972: ABU produced the Ambassadeur 5500C and 6500C. This is also the transition year which ABU changed her Sideplates from Grooved Rims to Beveled Rims and Reel Foot from “Smooth” to the “Dimples” type.

1973: ABU produced the Ambassadeur 4000. In the same year, the first Direct-Drive Free-Spool System Ambassadeur 4000D and 5000D Reels were introduced.

*Black Ambassadeur 5500C (Decal Model) was introduced in 1979.

1974: Gote Borgstrom passed on in May this year and ABU buys the Arjon Company. Ambassadeur 5000C Deluxe Reels were also introduced.

*Ambassadeur 5000D with Champagne Gold Sideplate and Frame was introduced in November.

1975: Described as the “Superb Addition to the Family”, Ambassadeur 2500C was the first “Small Ambassadeur” to be introduced into the Ambassadeur Family. At the same year, ABU also produced the Exclusive 5500CDL model for the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, also known as B.A.S.S. Additionally, the Ambassadeur 5500 (Brown) was also introduced.

1976: Majority of ABU’s shares were sold to the Wallenberg Group’s Incentive AB. Ambassadeur 5600C and 6500 (Brown) Reels were introduced.

1977: ABU Museum was established. In the same year, the Ambassadeur 1500C, 4500, 4500C, 4600C, 5500 (Red and Champagne Gold), 5500D, 6500 and 6600C Reels were also introduced. In addition to the series of models introduced in this year, ABU also introduces the beautifully constructed 5600CDL, a 24K Gold-Plated model.

1978: Lennart Borgstrom moved to United States to try and save to ABU’s most important market. At the end of the year, ABU acquired its American distributor, the Garcia Corporation. ABU Garcia became a distributor responsible for the exclusive sales and marketing thrust in United States. The Ambassadeur 6500 (Red) Reels were introduced.

1979: The last batch of Silver Ambassader 6500C ended her production in August and the First Black Ambassadeur 6500C was produced in November.

1981: Len Brogstrom sold his remaining shares to Incentive and left ABU; after 25 years of leadership in the company.

1988: Inventive sold ABU Garica to Aritmos (another Swedish conglomerate).

1994: Aritmos sold ABU Garcia to Proventus (again another Swedish conglomerate).

1995: Proventus sold Abu Garcia to Pure Fishing.

2020: Lennart Borgstrom passed on in July this year.

Ambassadeur 5000 (A-A50-000-0-095-N-R)

Mr Simon Shimomura shared in his book, “The Ambassadeur and I”, page 23 that the sideplate was a “Very unusual 5000? Characteristics reflect those of a 6000 or 5000B. Approximately 200 pieces can still be found at the factory”. This book was published in 25th June 2000.

Indeed, this is an interesting Ambassadeur 5000 produced in October 1981 (first version) during the keynote year of ABU’s History.

This is 1981, the year Len Brogstrom sold his remaining shares to Incentive and left ABU; after 25 years of leadership in the company. The future of ABU remains uncertain.

ABU started seeing red in mid 1970s. While we knew that ABU will never waste any of its parts, it has became evident during these years. Many of the models printed on the hard boxes were seen to be pasted over with the decal of another model; a bid to save cost from reproduction of new boxes.

This is exactly what happened to this particular model. A unique “5000” decal was pasted over the sideplate of an Ambassadeur 6000.

This ‘5000’ decal was unique not only because it is uncommon, but also because of how it was produced. Unlike the foil decals seen during the late 1970s to the 1980s, this decal is neither Smooth nor Rough (Smooth Decal refers to the Ambassadeur Decal Models while Rough refers to the Rough HighSpeed Decal with horizontal strips). Measuring 11mm (L) by 4.5mm (W), you can see that this decal is a hybrid, with horizontal strips running across the number ‘5000’ only.

I have seen 3 of the sideplates and 5 of these assembled Ambassadeur 5000 over the last 10 years.

So could this be a reel put together with the parts available? I will say yes, but really not possible unless I am proven otherwise from the few reasons stated below,

1. The assembled parts are really quite peculiar to the year of manufacture and they are not easy to find. Case in point will be the 68mm ‘Bullet’ Style Counter-Balance Handle. This handle is different from that of those used in 1974 (to be used without retainer), these handles are found to be used on Ambassadeurs produced in 1981 (an example will be the Ambassdeur 1500C produced in 1981),

2. This is the only correct matching Fish Box (used only in 1981) I have seen thus far,

3. While it may still be possible to change the sideplate of the above mentioned reel to that of an Ambassdeur 5000A bearing the same foot number (811000), it is just not economical; unless deliberate. That being said, getting a matching Fish Box is also another challenge, and

4. There are a total of 4 reels seen with identical parts and this cannot be just coincidental.

So how many of such assembled Ambassadeur 5000s are there; I am keen to find out!

The 2 possibilities are,

1. This is not an original part to this reel produced in 1981, or
2. This is an old part used by ABU which may be possible since (a) ABU never waste its parts and (b) This is a critical year for ABU and the factory is getting rid of all her old parts.

Reel Tuning (Part 1)

Reel Tuning is one of the favorite topic discussed and I too have been asked by many. This article share some basics of Reel Tuning and I hope it is useful for your next project.

WHY should we Tune a Reel? Tuning a reel allows one to bring out the best potential of his/her fishing reel so that they can perform with minimum effort (friction), thus allowing the angler to cast at ease. It is not surprising that many renowned Fishing Tackle Companies knew the importance, however it is just not economical for them to do so; either that it takes too much time, or it is too expensive to do so. Some models did attempt to do so with the addition of bearings or increase the number of polished parts, but there are much more potential left for us to tap in the reel of ours. These mentioned Factory Tune reels are often market as ‘Sports’ or ‘Racing’ version.

WHAT is Reel Tuning? Reel Tuning involves the (1) polish of all friction points, (2) increase the number of bearings and/ or (3) decreasing the weight of the parts. Of course, this also depends on your fishing application.

In this article, you will see 3 x Ambassadeur 2500C tuned in 3 different ways. I will also show you some of the PROs and CONs so that you can decide what you want and how far you will want to push ahead for your project.

Reel A: A Classic Ambassadeur 2500C produced in November 1975 (Version 1) seen with many Battle Scars.

Reel A (751000). Well-used 100% Original Ambassadeur 2500C,

Reel B: A Classic Ambassadeur 2500C produced in February 1977 (Version 1).

Reel B (770200). An Original Ambassadeur 2500C Tune and Mod with 5 basic bearings (2 x Spools, 2 x Cogwheels and 1 x Levelwind), and

Reel C: An Ambassadeur 2500C Nostalgia produced in 1998.

Reel C (070008). Ambassadeur 2500C Nostalgia fully tune with all the bearings and parts I can get.

These reels are tuned and tested without their lines so that I know they are tuned to the best of their potential. Below are the verdicts,

Reel A: An Classic Ambassadeur 2500C (751000) produced in 1975.

Reel A. This is the most economical way of tuning a reel and I am impressed with the way they function; way better then how they were first bought. However, one also need to understand that tuned parts are more susceptible to oxidization, hence frequent maintenance is required should you want it to perform at its peak all the time.

Reel B: An Classic Ambassadeur 2500C (770200) produced in 1977.

Reel B. This is the best upgrade (with tuning of cause) in my opinion because the bearings aid in the free spool and they don’t oxidize, hence able to provide a longer duration of peak performance for the user. The upgrade is also not considered expensive for a super tuned reel of this caliber. The change of a light weight spool will allow you to convert this little reel to cast super light lures.

Reel C: An Ambassadeur Nostalgia 2500C (070008) produced in 1998.

Reel C. This is the ultimate tuning of an Ambassadeur 2500C. You can choose to do that if you have the extra cash or if you want to be different from others. The result is of cause the best in my opinion, however the additional performance does not justify for the extra extra dollar spent on the upgrade.

Reel Tuning (Part 2)

It is always fascinating how a Supertuned Ambassadeur can performs; often beyond what an angler can handle. While the process of tuning such reels to its fullest potential is one that is onerous, what this brings about is also the sense of achievement.

In addition to the multiple cleaning and polishing over the process of tuning, the most important step is the inspection and matching of all its interrelated moving components; this is the essential to success.

While cleaning and polishing, some of these damage parts are often pass-off without being detected.

It is often seen that one will load lines on their spool during tuning so that it will spin longer; visually satisfying! So the question is, does a heavier spool spins longer?

The answer is yes, with higher initial force; but why is it so.

Using back Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, Fnet= ⚠P/⚠T

However from a purist perspective, I will still prefer to tune reels without their lines loaded as it allows me to know that the reel has been tuned to its fullest potential.
